Steve Cartwright: Bail of the Summer
Posted On Aug 29 2008, 05:07 PM by asayer

This summer saw some heavy riding go down at Camp of Champions on the Blackcomb Glacier, in Whistler, BC. One name rising above many others all summer was Steve Cartwright. Ontario has known that Cartwright is the real deal for years now, but this season saw him break out to Whistler and make his mark. After a killer winter he decided to wrap it all up by overshooting a massive hip, earning one of the most talked about bails of the summer. Cartwright is currently healing up back in Ontario, stuntin' in his new grill and making full use of his blender.

So people have been talking about your hip overshoot bail like you're the Jake Brown of snowboarding... Give us a rundown of what happened and the injuries incurred.
Oh, I dunno if I would say that... It felt like a full size sucker punch from Tyson for sure. Long story short, I was hitting a hip at camp and, after waiting 35 minutes between one of the drops, ended up coming into it with too much heat. I fell out of the sky and was lucky enough to have my chin perfectly aligned with my knee. Two plates, six screws, 23 stitches, one bolt, and I'm rocking a grill for six weeks. Still, it could have been worse. (see the video right here)

How'd the winter go, besides the not-so-happy ending you got this summer?
This winter was amazing; it was the first year I got to cruise around Whistler/Blackcomb for a good chunk of time... even got a little taste of the backcountry this year. The wild kids roam out there for sure.

Where did your footage end up this season?
The eye candy's sitting on the cutting block over at sandboxland.com. Super tight crew coming from all over the west... these kids are all relaxing next level and sitting raw.

What have you been eating since your jaw is wired shut?
The liquid lunch has been treating me pretty well. I'm already starting to look like Sstarvin' Marvin, though. I've been promised all the organic meat I can eat as soon as I'm chewing like a carnivore again.

Gonna be wearing a mouth guard next season to protect that dope grill?
I'll be looking into it. I'm starting to wonder how much metal they could put in there before I start setting off metal detectors.

Plans for next season?
Hopefully I'll be jumping into the States a lot more... keep my grind, keep filming, stay on the stick as much as possible. As long as I'm out there with my bros and having fun, I'm winning all day long.

Did you get anytime in your homemade jib park in Ontario this season? You and Simon Chamberlian both grew up riding with your own private park. How much of a secret weapon is it?
I spent very little time there this year. I grew up messing around the backyard, on rails my bros and I would build. It's no bullshit when they say, "snowboarding is what you make it". I think that applies to anything in life. I still get the best feeling just hiking a rail on a sunny day with friends or seeing a finished product after the broken bones.

Last words?
Keep it raw, always fan a fire and think yoga poses if you're ever falling from the sky. Just a quick thanks to the family, all my bros, my sponsors who believe in me, and everybody that I forgot: you know who you are.

Pretty stoked to see Cartwright's part this year...

As an unfortunate trend, we seem to be covering Steve Cartwright falling on his ass more than landing

The only reason Cartwright is getting coverage for having a crazy fall is because he's so damn good at landing and has been killing it all winter, not because of the bail itself. Make sense?

Poor Steve Cartwright. The only coverage he's had on Push so far has been a video clip of him eating

Time is running out, my friends. This Sunday, July 26th is the last day you can snowboard on the Blackcomb

Dulling his edges on the small slopes and parks of Ontario, Andrew Skelhorn is currently in the middle
