With his blond (ginger
tinged) hair flowing in the wind, Scot Brown makes his snowboard perform feats
beneath his feet that others cannot. Scot Brown - once from Blue Mountain, now
from Whistler - has the best board control in the game right now. But like a
true master of the deck he would never admit it.
In his first season out
west, Scot bagged the most coveted spot in any Canadian snowboard film - the
opening part in the Sandbox video. Did he really manage this by "just doing
some boarding" as he puts it?
Moving out west from
Ontario is supposed to be every snowboarder's greatest struggle. A few years of
washing greasy dishes at The Keg, picking up your buddies empties in bars, and
shoveling Sansalone's driveway is the usual route to affording a sled and
getting a couple shots in the "friends" section. Scot, obviously, took the fast
track. Not to say he had it easy and didn't work for it. No, his opening part
is a testament to his talent and work ethic on the board.
Scot doesn't talk about
these two things that make or break a snowboarder, either because he doesn't
know or doesn't care - he just likes to ride. When he casually mentions
entering two contests last year, he doesn't bring up the small matter of taking
first place in one of them.
Although
board-contorting tricks down handrails and other creative obstacles are what he
stacked his part with, backcountry shots are getting churned out as well. By
the sounds of it, now that he's tasted pow there is going to be more of it
appearing in his parts. So enjoy those presses while he's still performing them
because if any rider could trick a skateboarder into calling a snowboard
maneuver a "blunt" it would be Scot Brown. And that is a serious compliment.

So you scored the opening part in Sandbox's Now You Know. Was
this your first major video part? How did you find filming it?
Yeah I think so... Flow's
video came out shortly before Sandbox, but either way filming last season was a
lot of fun. I met a bunch of cool dudes, and just did some boarding.
What was the hardest part about putting together
a full part?
Going sledding multiple
days in a row was super hard for me. I hope I can stop being a bitch soon.
Where did you film most of the video?
In Calgary, Minnesota,
and around Whistler.
What else did you get up to last winter?
I did two contests last
season, one being the Frozen Rail Jam in Ontario while I was home for
Christmas, and the Showcase Showdown in Whistler. Other than those I did a few
trips, filmed, and shredded the mountain.

You're older brother is a damn sick rider as
well. What impact did coming from a snowboard family have?
Oh yeah, Eric is gangst!
I love snowboarding because of my parents and Eric for sure. They kept me
believing that it's perfectly normal.
Did you guys ever have beef growing up?
No, not really. I was a
bit of a meathead when I was younger. I used to throw things at him and just
book it. We got along for the most part though.
What about snowboard wise, do you ever get real
competitive or try to one-up each other?
Umm, not really. I
remember being in the finals of a few rail jams where it just felt like it was
just me against him. We would look at each other and smile or laugh or give one
another compliments or support. We just made shit happen.
You have a pretty unique gig on the board, how
would you describe your style of riding?
I just shred and do
things that feel good.
Just 2% of North American's have red hair yet I
can name a handful of insane ginger snowboarders. E-Man, Beau Bishop, Shaun
White, etc. What's up with this?
I never looked into it.
I have blonde hair; I'll just leave it at that.

Your press game is pretty untouchable. What is
your trick to doing full blunt-like presses on a snowboard?
What you do approaching
the rail is just as, or more important than, what you do on the rail.
Do you ride real soft or short boards?
I ride a 155 on
handrails and park and a 158 for pow. I find anything smaller too soft and
dinky.
There were a couple pow shots in your Sandbox
part. If you had a choice for a day would you hike a perfect rail set-up or hike
the backcountry for pow?
I would hike some
pillows or something for sure. Powder doesn't compare.
The new Sandbox teaser just dropped and looks
like you have been stacking some footy already. How has the season been running
so far?
This season has been so
fun. I've gotten the best pow laps of my life on the mountain. I've been
sledding a few times, and been on four rail missions. Right now I'm traveling
to meet up with Flow in a top-secret city to hit some rails. Haha.
What's the plan for this winter? West coast based
all winter?
West coast guaranteed,
it's better.
Scot's sponsors are Billabong, Flow, Von-zipper, and Pow.

And don't miss the q & a we did with Scot Brown early this season.
