Momentum’s Lil’ Buddies Preview
Posted On Aug 04 2011, 09:04 AM by fdaniello

Alex “Teddy” Stursberg resides in the East Vancouver neighbourhood of Strathcona, and back in ’09 I did a Push.ca feature about his home and the creativity that lurks inside (including his car-port mini-ramp/jam space better known as "The Gentlemen’s Den"). Although Teddy no longer runs his bedroom record label, Seeing Eye Records, he's put a great deal of focus into his signature style of art and developing unique characters.

Teddy in Tucson, AZ // 2010.

Earlier this year he created a small run of 32-page thumbnail ‘zines called Lower Animal that he handed out, which is how he was discovered by the Momentum Wheel Co.’s brand manager Dave Keras.

Sample pages from “Lower Animal”. I lucked out and got #99 of 100 copies.

“After picking up the pocket ‘zine I got in touch with Momentum's art director Andrew Pommier. We were both excited to see what Alex could do with the interesting characters he creates,” says Dave Keras. “The end result was the Lil’ Buddies wheel series for Fall 2011.”

“I’ve been a skateboarder and artist my whole life, but have never had a chance to do a project like this,” Teddy explains. “Also, I’m a big fan of Momentum and what it represents. To have a talented artist like Andrew Pommier actually seek me out is just some sweet icing on the cake. Anyways, I wanted to try and capture the excitement I felt about the project and relate it back to the excitement I used to get from skateboard graphics. I started skating in the early ‘90s when, in my opinion, graphics were at their most kick-ass. I wanted to pay my respect to this era and try to create graphics that you could just get lost in.”

Frank lives, skates and gets caffeinated in Vancouver, while hustling as the editor-in-chief of Canada's longest running skate mag, Concrete. He broke his long-standing claim of never becoming a Twitt (twitter.com/frankdaniello), and on a weekly basis his blog posts and feature columns can be found right here on Push.ca/skateboarding.
