After an early Queensborough sesh with Cam Weishaar and Craig Williams from Ultimate Dist. (a mini déjà vu of this) on Saturday, August 20th, it was off to The Kensington Contest in East Van, which was put on by BLVD Skateshop with support from Vans.

An overview of the pool party from the peanut gallery. Adam Hopkins grinds over the death box.
The comp had all the makings of a classic backyard jam, and by no means is the pool your average park bowl. The 5ft shallow, 6ft middle and 9.5ft deep has vert throughout, and the steep walls are topped with proper pool block (learn more about Kensington right here).

Rob “Sluggo” Boyce made his presence known (as per usual) with deep-end blasters like this stalefish.
As you can clearly see in my contest pics, I’ve discovered the Lo-Mob app’s “News Emulsion” filter on my iPhone, for better or for worse…

“Rise Up” interviewee Skylar Kehr stopped by to take things frontside over this tight hip leading into the shallow.

Colin Nogue might be afraid of ghosts, but he wasn’t afraid of the Kensington pool. Eye of the friendly tiger.

Colin again. Backsmith, brah. Check out his “Strange Landing” episode if you haven’t scoped it yet.

The crowd was hyped on the contest, and the fact that it actually became summer in 'Couver.

Jamie Maley takes a foot-rub break before he keeps shreddin’.

Adam Hopkins sings “La Isla Bonita” to himself in the spirit of performing a Madonna.

And whaddya know, Hopkins’ ripping ways landed him in first in the “Good” category, with James “Frontside Kid” Clarke in second, and Sluggo in third.
If you’re in the Vancouver area, by sure to swing by BLVD’s second annual Battle At Hastings on September 3rd.
