Without getting too far
into a long-winded story about how sick Jody is and how much he rips as a
shredder, I've decided to let him show you through a mini-interview and a "Day
in the life" photo essay. When I met Jody a long time ago, I wasn't to sure if
he had enough balls to make the big move out to Whistler in search of living
the dream. After watching him log
countless photos, interviews and video parts from the sidelines, I decided to
tag along to see what Jody was really like to ride with in person. Less than one week from making this all
happen, I hurt myself snowboarding and wasn't able to make it back on the snow
in time for this column to get taken care of. Photog Jarrod Au stepped in to
make it happen.
Sorry for not being
able to get out there and rip it up with you. My old age got the better of me a few weeks ago at one of
the You Look Good contests when I tried a radical maneuver and didn't quite
land it. Now that we've got the day in the life finished, how about a
mini-interview?
I'm down, I got nothing to do today.
You had a board
sponsor change recently, care to discuss?
I rode for Technine for five years and it seemed like the American side of
Technine had no room for me to grow, so I hooked up with Endeavor snowboards.
I'm stoked on Andre/Tenaya/Fyln and Brady for all their help and support with
T9 over the years. I still ride Technine bindings, love ‘em. But yeah, I jumped
on the Endeavor train this year and Max J/Scott S/Rob D have all helped me out
a lot in the last little while; I'm stoked on the move.
Sounds like a good
move forward for you! Let's pay
some bills for you; Who else are
you riding for at the moment?
Westbeach outerwear, Endeavor snowboards, Electric goggles, Ogio, Technine
bindings, Celtek gloves, Skull Candy, Elm headwear, Frontline streetwear, and The Circle Skate And Snow.
If I was a girl and I
wanted to learn a little bit more about you, what else would I need to know
that isn't already told in this ‘day in the life'?
You'd need to know I'm single, broke, looking for a girl that doesn't know
anything about snowboarding and dresses like a girl, not a tom-boy. Oh yeah,
she has to be RICH, like sooooooo rich. Call me?
I remember taking
some park laps with you about five years ago on a small hill in Winnipeg.
Nowadays you're living it up in Whistler as a sponsored snowboarder getting
interviewed by me. I can't really say that I saw this coming, did you?
Hell no. I thought I would be going to school or working at
some dead end job living at home. But living in Whistler is neat. It definitely has some down sides but what
place doesn't? I got my homies, the mountain, my health...I'm stoked.
Hit me with a
powerful closing statement that people will remember.
Ha ha, powerful eh? I dunno, go snowboarding, spray your art
around, don't think to much, party, hang with your homies, listen to music,
don't watch TV, support shit that's dope. Watch 8 Mile's new flick and David
Brocklebank's new vid, DOPE. If you don't know, you don't know, keep hatin'.

No day of shredding in
whistler starts correct unless it includes a Moguls sesh. Jody kicks it off
right with a classic Mogul's muffin and a coffee. Those muffins provide the
essential carbs to keep the pow legs stompin' all day!!

Heading up the Blackcomb
gondola. Muffin is still going.

Jody and I found this
little sender on the first run of the day. Frontside shifty pop, undisclosed location
on Blackcomb.

On the second run we
greased another secret cliff popper into the abyss of powtown. The snow was really
starting to come.

Time for a break at
Glacier Creek Lodge. It was getting wet and heavy so we met up with Jody's
roomate/ brobrah/Endeavor teammate Kevin Griffin. Of course no Whis pow day
lunch is complete without a classic poutine and a goggle wipe!

On the way to the park we
found this little doozy of a send, another secret stash somewhere on Blackcomb.
Jody gets his pow while navigating a tight tree line.

Endeavor teammate Kevin
Griffin looks on while Jody drops this pillow line. I swear we were on our way
to the park to frontboard a rail or something.

Here Jody is captured
hitting the hip the wrong way and sending a frontside 180 into the pow while it
blizzards. The snow was so heavy that I had to shoot from under a tree! This
was the only time we made it into the park. Keep in mind kids: no park on a pow
day!

Hey you guys! I sent it
five times! That's right, fiiiiiive tiiimes!

Nothing like meeting up
with your Ogio team manager after a hard day of pow shredding in a blizzard
to grab some fresh new softgoods. Here Travis Williams stops by
to spread the wealth. G.I. Joe?? Nah foo, it's O.GIO!

...and of course the best
and only way to end the day (other than sending to Garf's or some other equally greasy bar) is to chill out in front of a nice flatscreen with Skate on a PS3. "Hey
Kev...grab me a beverage from the fridge would ya?"
