Nyjah Wins 1st Street League: $150 000
Posted On Aug 30 2010, 02:39 PM by asayer

15 year-old Nyjah Huston became the first winner of Street League and went home with $150,000. It was sweet revenge after losing the Maloof Finals to Chris Cole just a couple weeks back. Nyjah became the youngest and last pro to join Street League coming in at the very last moment – a week prior to the first event at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale. He was up against 23 other pros as they competed for the most prize money in history.

The event started with a qualifier to get the 6 finalists and then had a last chance qualifier in the form of a Best Trick contest.

Here are the Top 7 results with the unique breakdown of difficulty and consistency unique to Street League:

1. Nyjah Huston 116 points 82% consistency $150,000
2. Shane O'Neill 114.9 points 79% consistency $80,000
3. Torey Pudwill 112.8 points 82% consistency $25,000
4. Sean Malto 111 points 86% consistency $10,000
5. Chris Cole 109.6 points 79% consistency $7,500
6. Chaz Ortiz 102.2 points 79% consistency $6,000
7. Paul Rodriguez 100.1 points 71% consistency $5,500

With the consistency those 7 pros have on the most difficult tricks it is going to be hard for any of the other 18 skaters to ever make a Street League final. Good luck to them though as they already gave up their right to do any other big money contests.

The turnout looked amazing. Look for more coverage on DC's website and the Street League site soon. Most of the content will be held for ESPN though so keep an eye out for that broadcast.

Here is an official release from Monster:

August 28, 2010 – Corona, CA – In a contest that saw the best street skateboarders in the world attacking an all-new contest format, Monster Energy congratulates Monster athlete and entrepreneur Rob Dyrdek as his first Street League Skateboarding™ event descended on the jobing.com Arena in Glendale, AZ to a near-capacity crowd. Amidst a stacked field the youngest pro in the field, Nyjah Huston won $150,000 today – the largest prize in skateboarding history – at the first stop of the DC Pro Tour Fueled By Monster Energy.

Congratulations also go to Monster Energy skater, Chris Cole on qualifying first for the finals and taking fifth overall among the worlds best skateboarders. After being invited as one of the world’s top 24, he qualified to be among the six skateboarders to advance to the finals. Cole was full of crowd pleasers—highlights include a frontside 180 switch crooked grind and noseslide from flat on the Creative Section, a fakie flip to switch backside lipslide on the Line Section, a backside 180 nosegrind switch 180 out on the Tech Section, and a 360 flip up to the ledge on the big section. Unfortunately, a few uncharacteristic missteps put Chris in a point deficit he couldn’t overcome in the final Big Section. With the crowd behind him Cole put down the highest scoring trick of the night with a gap to grapefruit grind and placed fifth with $10,000 for his efforts.

“Well if you fall a couple of times, you might as well dig yourself a hole and put yourself in it,” said Cole afterwards. “I got it figured out now. In the next Street League, it’s on like Donkey Kong.”

Today was just the first stop of Street League, a true street skateboarding contest envisioned by Dyrdek that is changing contests as we know them. The DC Pro Tour Fueled by Monster Energy continues September 11th, 2010 at Citizen Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. It finishes 2010 September 25th at the Thomas & Mack Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Don’t miss any action! Check out theberrics.com, The Skateboard Mag, and ESPN as the best street skateboarders in the world battle for the largest purse ever on the most legit street set-up and scoring system ever.
