The 2009 Burton US Open ended yesterday, putting a cap on both the Burton Global Open Series and the Men's Swatch TTR World Tour (the women still have one more chance at the Roxy Chicken Jam in Mammoth, CA). Stories coming out of the open are Danny Kass's record 5th US Open halfpipe title, Torah Bright's with Kelly Clark for US Open halfpipe wins, Canadians just falling short, but making a showing nonetheless, and Shaun White is, in fact, human. Variable weather also played a factor over the competition, but as always, it was the ones who proved that conditions don't matter if you're a winner.
Danny Kass won the men's pipe for the fifth time, giving him the record for most US Open halfpipe wins. His run of a "frontside 1080, Cab 1080, frontside 900, backside 720, ending with a switch alley-oop 540" was the clincher. Charles Reid, all-around Canadian ripper, landed in 4th, and Canadian pipe veteran Justin Lamoureux closed out the top ten. Where was Shaun White? Out with a severe ankle sprain; turns out he is human and can get hurt like the rest of us (except he probably did it trying 1260s, and you probably did it after a night of drinking).
Peetu Piiroinen's second place finish in the pipe was enough to solidify his standing as the Swatch TTR World Tour Overall Men's Winner. After a season of podium finishes, Peetu walks away with an extra $50,000USD on top of all his other winnings. Charles Reid finished the season in 6th, one spot outside the money, with Seb Toots in 9th.
The women's halfpipe was won by Torah Bright, narrowly edging out olympic medalist Kelly Clark. Palmer Taylor, Canadian Open pipe winner, was the highest for the Canadian women, finishing in 13th.
Men's slope was a close battle that was ultimately decided by Chas Guldemond's first run. Try as he might, Seb Toots couldn't crack Chas' run and landed in second place. Chas' win also clinched him the big $100,000 cheque for the overall Burton Global Open series win.
Kjersti Buaas took down both the women's slopestyle as well as the quarterpipe, but it was Jamie Anderson who took the Burton Global Open Overall title for the ladies.
Men's quarterpipe ended with Scotty Lago on top, winning him (along with Kjersti) the Volvo Most Valuable Rider awards, in the form of a new Volvo XC60 each. Seb Toots landed in third for the quarterpipe contest.
We've got Peetu footage from the pipe, celebrating his TTR win. For full coverage, visit GO211.com for video, opensnowboarding.com for US Open highlights, and ttrworldtour.com for all things TTR.
