Manitoba Mountain?
Posted On May 30 2011, 07:09 PM by Spencer Francey

No, it's not that Manitoba...it's in Alaska and it's going to be a new ski area of a different breed: a ski area focused on working with the local communities, saving energy and keeping it as natural as possible with some lift accessed terrain combined with a focus on backcountry access for visitors. All I can say is that I hope it all comes together as it looks like an amazing place to visit with the right people behind the scenes making it all happen. Check it out PUSH.ca people!

"Mountain Rider’s Alliance has launched a website, www.SkiManitobaMountain.com, detailing their plan to develop a low impact ski area on the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska. Three surface lifts will access 10,000 acres of legendary Chugach terrain. Renewable energy options including micro-hydro and wind are being evaluated.

Project manager Dave Scanlan recently concluded seven community outreach presentations. “The project was generally well received by the local communities. We appreciate everyone taking the time to join us as well as their informative feedback. We will be implementing the information gained into our master plan” said Scanlan."

Scanlan and members of the MRA met with corresponding governmental agencies where a road map through the permitting process was outlined. MRA expects to submit a formal application in October, 2011.

This place already sees dozens of skiers all the time.  Why does MRA feel the need to develop an area that has great skiing and a large user base?

What a refreshing change from the norm. Let's hope that this is the beginning of a new era in ski area development.

Finally, a ski area development with real terrain, instead of another low angle real estate developed soulless lame ass ski resort.
